PhD in Shape Sensing at the University of Basel

A PhD position in shape sensing is available at the University of Basel, Switzerland.


The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Basel has recently been awarded a flagship project from the Werner Siemens Foundation. The principal aim of this interdisciplinary project is the development of a minimally invasive robotic endoscope for cutting bone with laser light.

Job description

The successful candidate will develop a novel shape sensing technology based on optical fibers. The goal is to develop a fiber-based measurement system able to measure the shape and position of the robotic endoscopic with high precision and in real time.

Required qualifications

  • MSc in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering or closely related fields
  • Excellent knowledge in physics and optics
  • Strong programming skills

The position is for 3 years.
