Defining the Scope

Banner for posts covering the relation between the digital image processing field and similar fields.

There is no general agreement among authors regarding the scope of the terms image processing, image analysis and image understanding. As a consequence, frequently they are used interchangeably.

Another level of confusion arises when the words computer vision, robot vision and machine vision appear in the stage.

My position

I adopt the definition proposed by Rafael C. González and Richard E. Woods, which states that digital image processing:

  • Encompasses processes whose inputs and outputs are digital images
  • Encompasses processes that take digital images as input and return attributes extracted from those images
  • Encompasses processes that recognize objects present in digital images

As indicated by its name, this website is focused on digital image processing, although high-level processes that take as input the set of recognized objects will also be covered as the pace of science moves.
